Starting a business is one of the most exciting things you can do. It’s also one of the most misunderstood.
Because while there’s now more information than ever available – AI tools, templates, YouTube videos – what most people are really looking for isn’t more information.
It’s confidence and the ability to ask questions to someone who has been there and done it.
And often… it’s just knowing where to start.
In this guide, I’ll take you through a practical, step-by-step approach to starting a business in the UK, based on my own experience and what we see working with founders in our Ignite start-up workshops.
👉 Step 1: Start with your idea (but don’t overthink it)
Most people think they need the perfect idea before they start. You don’t.
You need something:
- You care about
- Someone is willing to pay for
That solves a real problem
Your idea will change – so don’t wait for perfection, it’s better to start with something.
👉 Step 2: Validate your idea (before you invest too much time or money)
Talk to your potential customers, test your idea early and get feedback quickly.
We see this stage come up a lot in our Ignite start-up workshop, where people are looking for a bit of structure and reassurance before moving forward.
👉 Step 3: Define your customer and your offer
Get clear on who your ideal customer is, what problem you solve and why they should choose you.
👉 Step 4: Build a simple business plan
This absolutely doesn’t need to be complicated or a lengthy document, it just needs to be clear.
We’ve outlined this in more detail in our ten-step guide to starting a business, which breaks down each stage in a practical way.
👉 Step 5: Understand your numbers
Know your costs, know your pricing and how you’ll make money.
👉 Step 6: Get the basics in place (legal, structure and setup)
Choose a business structure, register your business, and understand the tax basics
👉 Step 7: Build your online presence
Create a simple website and social media presence. Once again, this is a great example of where ‘done’ is better than perfect.
👉 Step 8: Start selling (earlier than you think)
You learn more from your first customer than from hours of planning.
👉 Step 9: Launch (even if it feels messy)
Start. Learn. Adapt.
👉 Step 10: Build resilience
Expect challenges at every step. Starting a business is often as much about emotions as it is about the practical challenges, be prepared!
Because, there are plenty of reasons not to start a business. If you’re feeling that, you’re not alone. I’ve covered this in more detail in this blog on Why you shouldn’t start a business.
Final thoughts: Start with action, not perfection
Starting a business doesn’t need everything to be figured out before you get going, it needs a starting point, a willingness to learn and the confidence to take the next step.
Are you ready to start?
If you’re at that early stage – idea, side hustle, or just thinking about it – we run a one-day, in-person, Ignite start-up workshop designed to help you:
- Validate your idea
- Build a clear plan
- Understand the fundamentals of what you need to know
- Build the confidence to move forward
Because starting a business is much easier when you’re not doing it alone.
