Thinking about starting a business? Evolve’s Ignite programme returns as the UK’s ‘hidden’ solopreneur boom gathers pace

The UK could be experiencing a surge in people starting businesses that largely invisible in official statistics, according to new research from Stripe Economics. The report suggests many new entrepreneurs are launching side hustles and solo ventures that fall below traditional reporting thresholds, creating a hidden wave of business formation.

In response to growing interest in self-employment, Poole-based business advisory firm Evolve is bringing back its successful Ignite start-up programme this September to help aspiring entrepreneurs take their first step with confidence.

Whether it’s a business idea that’s been sitting in a notebook for years, a hobby that friends keep saying could become something more, or a desire to take a different career path, many people reach a point where they start thinking about working for themselves.

The practical, one-day workshop has been designed to help people move beyond the idea stage by providing the knowledge, confidence and practical tools needed to start building a successful business.

Taking place in-person at Evolve’s offices, participants will explore every aspect of launching a business, including business planning, sales, marketing, branding, finance, legal essentials and developing the entrepreneurial mindset needed to succeed. Throughout the day, attendees will also have the opportunity to meet others at a similar stage of their journey, creating valuable relationships and a supportive network from day one.

David Mutton, Business Advisor at Evolve and facilitator of the Ignite programme, said: “The research reflects what we’re seeing on the ground. More people are exploring ways to work for themselves, often starting small with a side hustle or freelance business before taking the leap into full-time self-employment. Those businesses may not always appear in the official figures, but they’re very real and they represent an important part of our local economy.

“The challenge for many people isn’t coming up with a business idea – it’s knowing how to turn that idea into something sustainable.

“One of the biggest myths about starting a business is that you need to have all the answers before you begin. You don’t. You simply need an idea and the confidence to take that first step.”

Ignite is suitable for anyone considering self-employment, whether they’re exploring a business idea for the first time, looking to turn a hobby into an income, building a side hustle, changing careers or launching a freelance business.

Places are intentionally limited to ensure every participant benefits from an interactive and collaborative learning experience.

The next Ignite programme takes place on Friday 18 September at The Evolve Town House, 3 Winchester Place, Poole.
